With environmental and sustainability issues key to a £12 million redevelopment at Bermondsey Spa, London, high performance rigid urethane insulation from market leaders Kingspan Insulation was considered to be the product of choice for part of the scheme - the Artesian Building.
The curve-shaped structure designed by Pollard Thomas Edwards Architects combines both commercial and residential accommodation, with the ground floor completely dedicated to community use as a health centre including a dentist and a pharmacy. The apartments above provide affordable key worker accommodation and private for sale homes with full length balconies combining stunning views across London with the benefits of park-side life.
Following a vision from the Hyde Group to create new homes with a low impact on the environment, it was essential that only high performing eco-friendly constructions were specified for this project, resulting in an EcoHome rating of ‘very good’ being awarded.
Mark Horn from Rooff Limited, the Main Contractors for the project said: "We specified Kingspan Insulation Thermataper TT47 for this project, as it provided a light weight and practical alternative to using timber firrings when creating the falls for the roof water drainage, whilst meeting the required U-values."
Designed for use under fully adhered single-ply waterproofing, Kingspan Thermataper TT47 LPC/FM ensures low heat loss through the roof, as well as preventing the build-up of rainwater, which can seriously decrease the life of a flat roof by subjecting the membrane to thermal stress, alkali formation and mould growth.
If correctly applied Kingspan Thermataper TT47 LPC/FM offers continuous high performance throughout the lifetime of the roof. It is lightweight and easy to install, resistant to water vapour, and unaffected by foot traffic inflicted in the course of normal maintenance. With a thermal conductivity of 0.027 W/m.K, the boards can easily achieve the U-values required for compliance with Building Regulations.
The Kingspan Thermataper range has been designed to prevent the formation of water ponds (the most common cause of failure of flat roofs) by providing effective roof falls for both new and existing flat roofs. Each solution in the range has been specifically developed for use beneath a particular waterproofing membrane.
An independent study by highly respected Quantity Surveyors, Davis, Langdon & Everest, has singled out tapered insulation as the most cost effective water shedding option for warm deck flat roofing applications, yielding savings of up to 21%.
