Kingspan Thermaroof has the ‘X Factor’ at ExCeL

Kingspan Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM roofing insulation has been used on the £165 million, Phase II expansion of London’s first ICC and world-class exhibition and conference venue, ExCeL London, which hosted ITV’s ‘X Factor’ auditions in its 5,000 seat auditorium within hours of its completion, on time and on budget.

29,000m2 of the high performance insulation board were installed beneath a Sarnafil mechanically-fastened, single ply membrane.

Ian Coverdale, Technical Director of Hathaway Roofing Ltd, whose company carried out the installation on the project explained why Kingspan Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM was specified. “We regularly use TR26 and are very happy with the product characteristics and installed finish. On ExCeL London’s Phase II, there were specific material batch and delivery requirements, special board sizes and differing thicknesses required. Because of the sheer quantity of TR26 boards to be delivered to site, we phased the roof areas, ordering materials by phase and with specific delivery dates, to minimise material build up on site. Kingspan were in possession of our programme and were able to manufacture and deliver materials accordingly.”

“There were two membrane roof build-ups listed in the original specification. Both had specific acoustic requirements and were originally listed as rock fibre specifications. Our preference was to use PIR board in the larger areas for speed of installation and we were able to demonstrate that a build-up incorporating the TR26 product would perform well, acoustically, in the general areas.”

“The project was a great success for HRL and this is down to detailed planning and good logistical contribution from our supply chain members, which of course included Kingspan.”

Kingspan Thermaroof TR26 LPC/FM is light-weight, comprising a high performance Nilflam® insulation core, faced with composite foil. Its ease of installation makes it ideal for fast track building programmes.

The insulation is fully compatible with most mechanically fixed single ply waterproofing systems and, with a compressive strength which typically exceeds 150kPa at 10% compression when tested to BS / I.S. EN 826: 1996, it is suitable for use on access roof decks subject to limited foot traffic.

Located on a 100 acre site in the Docklands, Phase II takes the total capacity for ExCeL London’s event space to 1,000,000 square feet of flexible space including a new 5,000 seater auditorium, London’s largest banqueting hall for 3,000, a further conference suite for 2,500 delegates and a dedicated production kitchen capable of catering for up to 5,000 guests.

The highly adaptable design, by Grimshaw Architects, which allows five different events to be staged simultaneously within the building, will make ExCeL London the perfect venue for the seven Olympic and five Paralympic events scheduled to take place there in 2012
