Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board was used as exterior insulation for the recently completed Phase 1 of the Indescon Court development in the heart of the Isle of Dogs Regeneration Zone.
Designed by Grid Architects (formerly Hamiltons) for Galliard Homes, the £50m mixed use development consists of residential, retail and commercial units in 1.5 acres of open garden square with piazza-style public terraces. Other facilities on the site include: a private health spa; business centre; and restaurant and bar facilities. According to Grid’s Director, Colin Veitch, Grid decided upon 90mm Kingspan Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board for the new build project because of “efficiency, cost and familiarity”; and the premium performance rigid modified resin insulation board was installed as part of the EPSITEC Insulated Render System from Wetherby Building Systems.
Speaking on behalf of Wetherby Anne-Marie Armstrong said:
“We have full BBA certification for our EPSITEC Rail System which includes Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board. We use K5 because we can gain the same thermal efficiency with less bulk. It’s very easy to use, being lightweight and easy to cut. It also gives good adhesion to the render. The original specification was for mineral fibre but we managed to reduce the thickness of the system considerably by using K5 instead.”
Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board, which is suitable for use behind traditional and lightweight polymer modified renders, provides thermal conductivities as low as 0.020 W/m K. Grid’s ambitions for a bold statement for Indescon Court were achieved with a final WBS Silicone weatherproofing render in a striking combination of black to the main elevations with grey and orange providing contrasting features. Kooltherm K5 External Wall Board has a compressive strength typically exceeding 150 kPa and the product (and its rigid thermoset insulation core) are Class O as defined by the Building Regulations.
