Premium performance and high performance wall insulation products from leading manufacturer Kingspan Insulation were chosen for a major £40 million project that heralds an exciting new era for the Matthew Boulton College of Further and Higher Education.
The College, one of Birmingham's largest education providers, caters for more than 10,000 students and has outgrown its original Sherlock Street campus which was built in the 1960s.
That is why the College is moving three miles to a city centre site where new purpose built accommodation tailored to the 21st century needs of students and staff will open its doors at the start of the new academic year in September 2005.
The nine-storey 18,000 square metre complex will provide a state of the art learning environment as well as first class leisure and recreational amenities. These include a multi-purpose performance area, as well as cutting edge teaching and training facilities for a wide range of courses as diverse as medicine and graphic design.
Main contractors HBG Construction (Midlands) Ltd installed a total of 5,000 square metres of 45 mm thick Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board insulation behind the cladding throughout the upper exterior levels of the building.
In addition, 2,000 square metres of Kingspan Thermawall TW50 zero ODP partial fill cavity wall insulation board was installed for the traditional brick cavity walling on the lower levels.
Bruce Raw, of the architects Bond Bryan Partnership, who specified the Kingspan Insulation products for this prestigious project, said:
"The principal reason for choosing Kingspan insulation products, in preference to other alternatives, was that their reduced thickness minimised the overall width of the walls without compromising the superior levels of thermal efficiency and U-values which were required for a project of this nature.
"In addition our previous experience of Kingspan products left us in no doubt that they would meet the challenging levels of performance demanded by this project."
Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board is a premium performance rigid phenolic insulation product designed specifically for timber and steel framing systems. As well as a thermal conductivity as low as 0.022 W/m.K, CFC/HCFC-free Kingspan Kooltherm K12 Framing Board boasts a negligible smoke emission and Class O fire rating. In addition the product is unaffected by air movement and is also resistant to the passage of water vapour.
Kingspan Thermawall TW50 zero ODP is a high performance CFC/HCFC-free rigid urethane insulation product. The boards achieve thermal conductivity as low as 0.022 W/m.K and are faced on both sides with a low emissivity composite foil which is highly resistant to the transmission of water vapour. This reflective, low emissivity surface effectively doubles the thermal resistance of the cavity.
